Resource Consent Application


Apply for a resource consent

This form will help you apply to Wellington City Council for a resource consent (under Section 87AAC, and Section 88 of the Resource Management Act 1991).

Before you start

We recommend you talk to a Council resource consent planning technician about your application before you fill in this form. Contact the planning team by email or phone 04 801 3590.

You'll need to provide supporting documents and plans with your application. To avoid delays and extra costs, it's important that you provide detailed, high-quality information.

Documents required for resource consents

To ensure a quality application and documents, check the Ministry of the Environment guidelines and Section 3.2 of the Wellington District Plan

Once we have reviewed your application, we may also request further information to better understand the potential effects of the proposal (under Section 92 of the Resource Management Act 1991).

We may require a registered surveyor to certify contours, natural ground level, building site(s), the location of boundaries or any other feature that may affect this proposal.

How to fill in this application

You must complete all sections of this form, upload the required supporting documents, submit the form and pay the initial fee before we can accept and begin to process your application. Find out more about fee payment on our website. Details for making the payment will be sent to you in a confirmation email after you have submitted the completed form.

You can save this form and complete it later. Once complete, you can be emailed a copy of your application.

The form requires you to provide information regarding:

  • the property
  • the type of consent
  • contact details for the:
    • applicant (who the resource consent would be issued to)
    • agent (acting on behalf of the applicant, e.g. architect)
    • owner (as on the Record of Title)
    • any occupiers
  • details about the consent, i.e. what you are proposing to do and other considerations
  • supporting documents, e.g. Record of Title, Assessment of Environmental Effects, and plans.

If your application is incomplete, we may return it (under Section 88(3) of the Resource Management Act 1991).

How the information you provide will be managed

Once this application is lodged with the Council, it becomes public information (under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987).

If there is sensitive information in the proposal, you will have an opportunity to raise this at the end of this form.

We require the information you provide in this form to process your application under the Resource Management Act 1991 and to collect statistics.

The information will be stored on a public register and held by Wellington City Council. Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to see and correct your personal information held by the Council. Refer to instructions on how to make an information request.
